Te Ika A Maui and Te Waipounamu (aka North and South Islands in NZ)

According to this article, the New Zealand Geographic Board as started the discussion on whether to adopt Maori names to refer to the North and South Islands of the country (who currently do not have an official name). The new proposed nomenclatures are Te Ika a Maui for the North Island and Te Waipounamu for the South. 


Indeed, a creative, sound and innovative approach when it comes to baptizing a territory, which needs to be done wisely to avoid confusion.
